Clients don't necessarily care if a piece of work was paid for; they care if it demonstrates the skill they need. If you are a web developer, build a fully functional e-commerce site for a fictional brand. If you are a copywriter, write a compelling landing page for a product you love. Personal projects show initiative and allow you to demonstrate your absolute best work without client-imposed restrictions.
2. Redesign and Re-imagine
A classic strategy for designers and developers is to take an existing, poorly designed website or logo and redesign it. Publish a case study showing the "Before" and "After," and explain your thought process.
